Lectures in Moral Philosophy and Humanaties by George Grant

The Goal of Gileskirk is to provide a strong Humanities or Liberal Arts survey of the disciplienes of history, literature, philosophy, theology, civics, art, music, and architecture in four great epocks: Antiquity, Christendom, Modernity and American History or Culture.

Modernity

Modernity
Modernity's focus is composed primarily of the 19th and 20th centuries, with roots extending deep into the 18th century Enlightenment. Students learn about major 19th century European events, including how they influenced and were influenced by events in the United States. Since the 20th century has been called “The American Century,” we shift our gaze to pay particular attention to America during this time. Events and people covered include the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, the Revolutions of 1848, Karl Marx, Thomas Chalmers, both world wars, and the myriad philosophies that have taken root in modern times. This study incorporates the time-honored, classical approach of Moral Philosophy, equipping students with tools for a lifetime of learning: a working knowledge of the timetables of history, a background understanding of great literary classics, a familiarity with the sweep of aesthetic achievement, a basic comprehension of geography, the Principle Approach to discerning the implication of current events, and an emphasis on the application of a Christian worldview to all of life. Students study this period of human achievement in the context of its historical chronology and existing cultural factors as well as its providential and cultural significance. Every other subject and discipline flows from this integrated understanding of God’s world.
