American Culture (History) |
Our focus this year is
American history and culture, starting with ancient American
cultures and European exploration, continuing through the
17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and culminating in Theodore
Roosevelt's presidency. Topics include colonization of the
New World, the Puritans, the Founding Fathers, westward
expansion, the industrial revolution, the War Between the
States, and Reconstruction. This study incorporates the
time-honored, classical approach of Moral Philosophy,
equipping students with tools for a lifetime of learning: a
working knowledge of the timetables of history, a background
understanding of great literary classics, a familiarity with
the sweep of aesthetic achievement, a basic comprehension of
geography, the Principle Approach to discerning the
implication of current events, and an emphasis on the
application of a Christian worldview to all of life.
Students study this period of human achievement in the
context of its historical chronology and existing cultural
factors as well as its providential and cultural
significance. Every other subject and discipline flows from
this integrated understanding of God’s world.
